What do you answer your kids when they ask…

What do you answer your kids when they ask: what is the point of learning school stuff that nobody cares about?

Like the Lowest Common Multiple – or is it factor? See, I cannot remember! When they ask you what is the point of that, you come up with a politically correct reason, like, “You will need it in life, later when you are an adult.”

Oh!!! But, will they? Well, let me ask you this: when is the last time you used the term “Lowest Common Multiple” other than for homework with your kids?  Nah, don’t bother answering… I know you are googling LCM right now. And don’t you rely on me to explain it to you. I have been doing LCM for 3 months and every time my child asks me to check his work, I have to google it again to remind me what it means. I don’t think it is a reflection of a lack of brain power – although some might find this point debatable… I think it’s just too boring to deserve a storage space in the brain… Of course, I don’t say that to my kids!

So then, just when you think you might have convinced them that LCM is indeed very useful, they come back with the same question about GCF!!!! WHAT THE WHAT??!!!! For the lucky ones who don’t do fifth grade math, GCF is Greatest Common Factor (but I am sure you knew that!). The way I explain it to my kid is: it’s the opposite of LCM, except not really. I am wondering why his math teacher wants to see me this week…

Personally, I have moved on from trying to convince my kids that there is a point into everything they learn. I am now teaching them that you have to learn stuff JUST BECAUSE. I know it sucks, but hey, that’s the way it is. Feel comfort in the knowledge that every fifth grader has to do the same. I think that this year, I am definitely going to win the mother of the year award…
